How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Extreme cold or heat can sometimes cause a car to stop working. Wait a while before replacing it.
It's quite a hassle when the keys to your car break and it happens at the most inconvenient times! There are a few ways to fix the broken car key that don't require the purchase of a new key.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs allow us to open trunks, doors and tailgates without having to fumble around for a key. Some key fobs have an inbuilt key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these fobs depend on a small battery that provides power to their remote functions. If the battery fails, the key fob will no longer send a signal to be used to start the vehicle. There are many methods to fix a dead car key fob.
First, try to find out if your key fob is in fact dead. If it seems to be, then you'll have to replace the battery. You can do it yourself by taking the fob off its clip or using a screwdriver with a flat head. You should not apply too much force, or you could damage the fob. It is also important to ensure that you're using the correct kind of battery. Certain models might require a different type of battery. If the key fob isn't actually dead, you can sometimes revive it by bringing it closer to your car. The majority of key fobs utilize RFID (radio frequency identification) that only operates in a limited range. The ignition system must be able detect the signal. If you move just a few inches closer to your car, it might unlock or even begin to work.
Many car manufacturers have backup systems that can be activated if the battery of the key fob is low. For instance, many Ford models have a separate slot for the key fob which will start the engine when inserted correctly. You can find the instructions in the owner's manual of how to locate the slot and insert the key fob correctly. Broken Key Ring
The chip in the key fob is the one that communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. This chip can be damaged or there could be programming mistakes. If this occurs your key fob will not be able to send the correct identification code, and your car won't begin. In some instances a malfunctioning transponder key could be caused by physical damage or wear and tear to the key shell or contact pads.
You will often see warning signs on your dashboard when a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include warnings about errors, flashing lights or the key not locking the vehicle. If you notice these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately to request a replacement key fob or repair.
It's very easy to damage your key ring by putting too much pressure on it, especially when carrying multiple keys. This can cause the key fob to snap in half, which is one of the most common causes of broken car keys. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the little key ring that is at the top, where it connects to the keyfob. It's made of soft metal or plastic. I've punched a hole and wet-sanded it to strengthen it but I'm guessing the problem isn't resolved by this.
I've also wrapped the broken part of the ring in clear tape, but that isn't doing any good. It's really a shame, since I use the ring to hold my keys in place on the tiny mini-splitring which holds the larger split ring for the keyfobs that I have.
If the key fob's case itself is broken it is usually possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are online kits available however they're only a temporary solution. It may be quicker to get it fixed by a mechanic. You can also purchase the new case at an a locksmith or home improvement store. These cases aren't as costly as a brand new key fob.
